Petra (The Rose City)

The ancient city of Petra is one of Jordan’s national treasures, inhabited by the Nabateans and Edomites and Romans, Petra located in southwest of Jordan, 3hours drive from Amman city.


The history starts when Petra was first established to be the largest trading center at that period by the Nabataean Arabs, they were a nomadic tribe who lived and settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ,Petra always was under the attempted to control the city from the Greek and romans but didn’t succeed until the romans discovered the way to defeat them by controlling the water resources which was the important element for that city, after that period Petra was never mentioned for more than 6th centuries, from here the name comes as it called the lost city after discovering it by the swiss explorer Johann Ludwig back in 1812.

Petra also known as the red Rose City because the color of the stones which used in its buildings and by far its best-known tourist attraction for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, Petra was named a UNESCO World Heritages Site in1985 and one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
